Sierra National Forest Aug. 21-23, 1998

These are the details of the trip described on the previous page.

Directions from the SF Bay Area:

The Auberry Road - 168 junction is in the small town of Prather. There is a Chevron station and a small market at the intersection. There is a ranger station on 168 just north of the intersection where you can get trail info, maps, and a fire permit. Coming back south on 168, there is another Auberry Road intersection a few miles north of the correct intersection. The well-signed intersection is the wrong one, from there Auberry Road goes north, not south.

The town of Shaver Lake is at the junction of Hiway 168 and Dinkey Creek Road. From there you can explore many different trails that are marked on the NFS maps, and are maintained by Fresno area 4 wheeling clubs. The Four Wheel Drive Club of Fresno is the club responsible for opening most of the trails. One of their members who knows the trails is Stan, he owns Stan the Man's (a 4wd shop), (209)-255-4100. Another source of local info is the local ranger (209)-297-0706 Try one of them for updated trail reports.

I have scanned in the Sierra National Forest Off-Highway Vehicle Guide map. You can click on this small map to download a bigger, more legible version.

There are many trails in this area, they are all rated by the local users.
