Do toyota trucks/4runners/cruisers last as long as they say? What kind
of total odometer miles are we talking about here?

Manny

My 85 has 230,000 and I've done my share of work to it but it all
depends on how you treat it. IMHO if you don't do something to cause it
it won't break on a Toyota unless it's a head gasket.

I guess this is where we all are supposed to comment on our mileage. My
'89 is also just "broken in." I turned over 140,000 this last weekend on
a 4X4 trail in the Sierra's. I had the valves adjusted at 104,000. My
stock V6 has been great to me. Many of these miles have been off paved
surfaces. A guy at work has a '91 with over 200,000 highway miles and it
looks and runs great.

While Nick may disagree, my experience says they die (with poor maintenance)
at about 200,000. However, with perseverance and money, they can be brought
back to life. You would never imagine how many things can/will go wrong.

Depends on how you drive it, I have about 180,000 but I have gone
through the engine about five times, bent valve, cracked piston, cracked
block, blown head gasket, etc.... Although it did make to about 120,000
before I had any major ploblems...

I have 83,000 on my '86 original. Had to go thru it because the dumb&^s
that owned it before me only changed the oil in it on the fourth of
July. I didnt find this out until after I had given him the check from
the bank. But see them all the time with well over 100,000 miles. The
V-6 will go just as long as the 22r in my opinion. We have a guy that
comes in when he hasd destroyed something else pulling bulldozers with
his '90 model xtra cab 4x4 and he has well over 300,000 miles on it.
Everything on the truck has been replaced except the engine. That
includes transmission, transfer, both diffs twice, and various other
pieces. Thats just what I have seen in the couple of years I have been
at the dealer.

There are many on the Cruiser list in excess of 200,000. There is one
that's approaching 500,000.

Let's see...Original owner of an '88 X-Tra Cab V-6. Rear brakes
lasted 90K miles, fronts 115K miles. Original clutch was still
going strong at 122K miles but decided to put in new one for an
upcoming Sledgehammer run. A friend of mine has 260K miles on
his '84 22R and still has no problems. Mine has 140K absolutely
(and I do mean that) trouble-free miles. Still on the original
head gasket, too. Oops, forgot. The horn quit working at about
the two thousand mile mark (I knew there was something...). Of
course the warranty took care of that.

Heck yours aren't even broken in yet... I have an '85 4runner, 205K, just
got done towing my camper 500 miles over the weekend and used *0* oil,
and got 21 mpg to boot. The truck has 135K on it, but now has a v-8...
(the guy that I swapped engines with had 145k on his). A guy who works
with my wife has 308K on his 89 no engine work yet... he bought it with
like 220K 4 yrs ago - it was a courrier vehicle, and probably used fairly
hard.

Previously owned:

'86 4x4PU 190k no major work, I was second owner. At 190k it needed
rebuild as it was burning 1 qt. oil every 300 miles. Before
I got to rebuild it, it was turned into an accordian in the
middle of a 50 car fog pileup on the freeway.

Currently own:

'85 4Runner 201k miles, complete rebuild at 185k, was burning oil at 1
	qt. every 300 miles.

'86 4x4PU 138k miles, complete rebuild at 135k miles, blew a head
gasket and overheated severely when my wife did not stop
right away, so we just went ahead and did the rebuild.

All of these vehicles are 22RE engines.

Hi Ed,

In response to tour Question, "Do Toyota Trucks / 4Runners / Cruisers, last
as long as they say?
What kind of 'Total' odometer miles are we talking about here?"

Well, Sir,
Let me say that, I own 2 Toyota 4Runners currently. Both 4Runners are RED
1986 models with the 22R EFI engines.
They both are good vehicles with COLD a/c ! :-)
One has an Automatic transmission, it has 237,600 actual miles.
The other:
4Runner has a 5-Speed manual Transmission with 185,312 actual miles on it.

It seems that I Got the Fever for a 1997 Tacoma Extra Cab 4WD and bought
it! ( Tacoma LX, Sierra Biege)
But I think it looks GOLD !, My 2 cents worth! :-)

Useable life depends on the maintenance. 200K miles plus is not
unreasonable. Rebuild only when needed. Some common problems to watch
for on high mileage engines include the timing chain and related
components, valvetrain wear, and deterioration of the coolant pasages in
the cylinder head near the exhaust ports.

Keep the oil changed, the coolant clean, and adjust the valves every
15-30K miles. Replace the timing chain if it becomes noisy. If the
cylinder head needs to be removed for any reason over 100K miles,
replace the chain, tensioner, guides, and sprockets at this time (chain
replacement is much easier with the cylinder head removed).
