Howdy folks,
I am replacing the timing chain in my truck today... I started the project
yesterday.
I too had a very difficult time getting the bolt loose. My problem wasn't a
long enough breaker bar or lack of equipmment; it was that I couldn't
"lock" up the motor to apply any real torque to the bolt. When I put the
truck in gear and "stood" on the brakes, the clutch would just slip.
I decided the easiest approach was to drop the oil pan, rotate the motor
until the crank was getting close to the inside of the block, insert a
small block of wood between the inside of the motor block and the crank,
and further rotate the crank until it was "locked up."
Then, I used a 4 foot leverage bar over a 3/4 drive ratchet and pulled on
that sucker for all I was worth. It came loose.
Incidentally, I do have an air compressor and a 1/2 drive impact gun but it
would not break that bolt loose.
In my particular case, I have taken out the front differential some time
ago for repair, so that may have made dropping the oil pan much easier
than if it were in place.
On a positive note, in my case, the pan was a snap to remove, and the rest
of the job is going smoothly. My only complaint is the brackets for the
power steering and air conditioner were a pain to take off, but this may be
because I don't work on cars much anymore. I guess I'm just not used to the
little obstacales.
I hope this note helps; others may have a better solution, but this worked
for me.
Good luck and be persistant. It's always easier to work on things if you're
not ticked off about the project.

Put a breaker bar wedged between the frame and kick the engine over (do not
start it)
Works every time..
