Drain the radiator just to the point where you think the level is below
that of the thermostat. I know you can't see in there but just guess by
looking at how much coolant is in your drain pan. Keep this stuff away
from dogs and cats! A little coolant will run out when you remove the
t-stat housing, but it won't make much of a mess.
The fuel filter is a MAJOR PAIN. It is buried deep below the intake
manifold, above the oil filter. It is best to access it through the R/F
wheelwell. Although you can not really see it this way, it is the
easiest way for me to get my hands in there. The banjo fittings have a
17MM hex for a wrench. Loosen these first. Some fuel will dribble out.
Make sure you have new brass washers for the banjo fittings. Now, the
hard part. The filter is held onto the block by two 10MM hex head bolts;
on on the top of the filter, the other on the bottom. Go through the
wheel well again with a long extension and a universal joint for the
bottom. You may be able to reach the top bolt from above. Be patient and
take your time. The first time I did this it took me an hour.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

No need to bleed the system. You can, if you wish, jumper the fuel pump
terminals (Fp & +B; left fender connector or diagnostic ALDL on newer
models) to run the fuel pump without starting the ignition.

When preparing to replace the fuel filter on an EFI motor,
don't forget to take the gas cap off to fully de-pressurize
the gas tank. Otherwise, it will continue to drain forever.
The Haynes manual conveniently left that out :).

I have an '85 22re and you only need to lower the coolant to below the
level of the thermostat before removing the thermostat housing.

The filter is right under the intake manifold on the right side of the
engine, above and to the left of the oil filter. It's bracket, which
is attached to the filter, is bolted to the block with two bolts. You
should loosen the fuel lines before unbolting it. Don't worry, you
can't get your face anywhere near it. It's a bear to get at and I
found a small mirror, small fluorescent shop light, and 3/8" socket
wrench/extensions enabled me to get at the mounting bolts. It will
leak some fuel so be sure the engine isn't hot. The fuel line
fittings have thin washers which come with the filter and should be
replaced. An extra pair of small hands is a help. It took me close
to two hours to do it, most of it spent retrieving dropped washers and
wrenches. Don't try it on the lawn.
