Could be the axles rattling around in the knuckles. If any brake work
was done and the mechanic left out either the spacer or retaining-ring
(the old spare-part syndrome) from the shaft assembly, the axles will
"walk" a bit in the knuckle assembly. Another possibility is the
steering knuckle bushings are worn, causing free play inside the
knuckle.

I had a similar noise in the front of my 89 xtra cab. I started paying
attention to the noise and discovered that it only happened when the wheels
were turned all the way one way or the other. It was the turning limiters
(I guess that is what they are called). There are some studs on the
steering knuckle front and back and some stops (actually short tracks) on
the lower A-Arm. When the plastic tips break off of the studs and the
stops start to rust a little, the most horrendous noise is made when in a
full turn and hitting a bump at the same time. There is actually a dry
metal to metal contact in this situation. Try to find the stops (tracks)
and the studs, apply a coat of wheel bearing grease, the noise will
probably stop. Mine did.

I now grease that contact point every oil change. I was told by a Toyota
Mech. that the plastic tips are not really worth replacing because they
break off almost immediately anyways. He said just keep them greased.

Hope this solves the problem.

There is a specific procedure in the service manual where you measure
the clearance between the spacer (with the retaining ring installed) and
the knuckle housing. I can look this procedure up and the specs. for it
if you like.
