I can usually tell by how much the shifter is moving, but you can have
someone watch as you slowly release the clutch with the emergency brake
on. You might break the mount by prying on it. When I changed my
transmission I found that the transfer case mount was also broke, not
sure how you could tell this. The easiest way to tell that a motor
mount is broken is the vibration, since the rubber is not holdong the
inner mount in place it is free to move against the outer "cup," When
an engine is running and mounted solidly, metal to metal you WILL know.
And as I said, if you have someone watch it will lift up.

With the parking brake engaged, place the vehicle in gear and apply a
light load with the throttle. The motor will shift in the direction
opposite the bad mount. To check the other side, use reverse gear.

When my motor mount broke, the engine cocked over to the side so far that
the accelerator cable jammed, the engine raced, and it was obvious
something was wrong. I was able to drive it after moving the charcoal
cannister out of the way. I just got under there and looked at it being
crooked until I figured out what had broken.
Maybe a floor jack with a piece of wood on top under the oil pan could
be used to lift the engine. If one mount is broken, it should be obvious
as the frame on the other side lifts up, while the mount seperates on
the broken side. That's how I changed mine, by lifting the engine from
underneath.
