I don't use mudflaps but have heard the following: in the rear you can cut
the top few (like 3 or 4) inches off, redrill the mounting holes and mount
the flap a few inches higher. This makes it harder for the tire to get a
grip on the flap and pull it off. BTW in California you are required to
cover only the top half of the tire, and on a stock toyota the flaps hang
down well below that.

For mud flaps:
Either remove them for wheelin' or put an eyelet up as far back as the
flap will reach and put a hook on the flap. Hook them up for wheelin.
Someone told me this but I have never done it.

Belive it or not, but we up here in Frosted Iceland have this mud flap
problems in deep snow... The snow keeps tearing them off when trucks
reverse.
Our solutions, which might not work for you rocky guys, is to have a
wire or a chain going from the body (running boards) and to the flap.
This keeps the flap from jamming between the tire and the compressed
snow. The wire kind of forces the flap upward when something presses on
it. Also a smart setup could allow you to shorten this wire at a
glance, and glue the flap up to the body.
A quick disconnect system have also been made. The 44 inched 80-series
in my SAR team has that setup. A Box profile is welded to the frame and
another smaller box profile is mounted on top of the flap. The small
profile then is just put into the big one and a bolt put through, and
you have a mud flap disconnect system. Needless to say, one never
bothers to jump out and disconnect them. And the system get damaged
every time.....;-))

Cheers Runar.

As far as a disconect for mudflaps; next time you're around one look at the
flaps on a semi-truck. My friend made a disconect for his '83 and it works
great. If I didn't completly remove mine (It's been about 7 months and I
still haven;t been pulled over for it :O) ) then I would do the same.
Instead of a boxed setup he used solid round stock & round tubing(thick
walled). Get the right size of metal so that the solid stock can just slide
into the tubing. Attach the solid stock to the mud flap, attach the tubing
to the truck, insert the mudflap into the tubing, drill a hole straight
through, insert a codder pin(bolt, ect.....) viola :)
He used a codder pin and it's quick to remove.
