I have a '84 shortbed SR5. It has been making a small ticking noise
that changes with engine speed. I checked valves. Didn't help. Even
gave up and took in to a dealership. They couldn't find anything wrong.
Everyone that I have talked to around here has told me the same thing.
All Toyota's will have this "tick". Any Ideas?
P.S.=short of tearing the engine apart, I have done all I can!

I hope this help

Please don't think this a Stupid Response to your "Ticking"
Question, But Did you check for a piece of gravel in one of
the Trucks tires?
This will mimick the same "ticking" sound and it will increase
in frequency as you accelerate.
Good Luck!

Have you checked for leaks around the exhaust manifold?

Hmmm, maybe nobody got the email I put out. The ticking is because
toyota uses solid aluminum rocker arms, the little bit of gap between
the cam and the arm causes a "tap." End of discussion. Crank down your
valves, and you'll lose the noise, of course you'll wear out your cam
too. My guess with the egr valve is that you are probably changing the
timing or the idle enough that is making a change in the valve sound.
The rod and main bearings would "knock", not "tap". Change your oil,
adjust the timing, adjust the valves, and that is all you can do. Make
sure your engine is hot when you adjust the valves, it will make a
difference.
If the sound is somewhat intermittent it is your timing chain "slapping"
against the cover, not good. Check for exhaust leaks (look for black
carbon build up around the exhaust manifold, or pour water over the COLD
(doing it hot can warp things) exhaust manifold. The leaks will magnify
the valve tap. when you change your oil feel it as it pours out to see
if there are any metal particles and make sure you have a magnetic drain
plug (I replaced all of my plugs with magnetic ones). The only time
(well usually) that toyota engines have problems is when they are ran
without oil, or you have a blown head gasket and you have water in your
oil (just pull up your dipstick and see if the oil is milky). Hope this
helps...

Is the ticking a once per revolution tick, or 4 or 6 ticks per revolution
of the engine? In other words, do you hear 10 ticks per second at idle or
40 ticks per second. That will tell you if it is a single valve or rod, or
if it is something common like all the valves.
My 87 ticked a lot I thought. Is your truck fuel injected. I was told by
the dealer that the ticking I heard was just the normal fuel injection
'injecting' ticking sound.
