Sorry I didnt respond sooner. I don't have Toyota experience with this
but my old VW beetle with a big engine in it had this trouble. I finally
used baling wire/mechanics wire/safety wire and wrapped a loop around the
release arm, around the clip and the "ear" on the throw out bearing. Not
too tight to prevent or restrict movement but just "there"to prevent the
original clip from falling out and not doing it's job.

This is a bit hard to describe. With all the pieces in place (PS BUY NEW
CLIPS) I would start by wrapping a couple of turns of wire around the
release arm. This should be tight and not able to fall off and cause
more trouble! Then just 1or maybe 2 loops around the clip. Try to go
around a spot where if it tries to slip out of position, the wire will
retain it. Then finally for the last part, a loop around the ear itself
and back to the release arm. I think you will get the idea.

Again no Toy experience with this but I did it to all my old beetles and
never had trouble again. I did break the clips, but never lost one or
had the bearing come loose. Theoretically there should never be enough
free play to allow the bearing to come loose like this but I've had it
happen (?) Anyone else?

Subject: Clutch release arm and Throw-out Bearing

While wheeling my 85 Toy the other day my clutch pedal went right to
the floor. As it is stupid to even think about doing anymore than
checking the slave cylinder while in a mud hole(which i did)...i left my
truck in the woods over night and towed it to my house the next day.
Well to my horror I found that my Clutch release arm had been machined
away by the throw out bearing(whachamacalit...that thing the bearing
rides on with the ears). Well that explaines the whining noise. My
question is this, is there a better way to mount the throw-out bearing
to the release arm than those little clips that NEVER seem to hold. Ive
had my tranny out a few times and without fail one of those clips has
fallen off and the other one is snapped.
Any aftermarket setups that work???...anybody ever do a custom
setup???....PLEASE HELP!!!...I refuse to put my tranny back on if its
just going to do this again and again.....Thanks
