Sounds like a sticky thermostat. Replace it. Its cheap, and real easy to
do. Then see if your other problems go away.
Also, top off your coolant when you're done - you might have a little air
stuck in there. Does your heater work?

I bought my '88 Runner in Jan. My 22re had to go through the same deal.
After a head gasket job I am not convinced I needed, my rig was doing
just what your describing with overheating. (no runability problems ever).
I just replaced my "factory" stat with a NAPA unit. It does not run as
warm (relevant here in the frozen north) but I don't get those erractic
start ups.

Mine would stick about every two times out ten...after any stop of an
hour or more.

Change the stat...it took me 20 minutes at the most and and it cleared
up the problem.

From Barney:
Use a real Toyota thermostat. I have been told they are better than the
after-market replacements. I know I have been through two non-Toyota
thermostats is 2 years. I just put in a Toyota one yesterday (9/5/98).
We'll see how long this one lasts.
