Wow,
I was about to get my AC charged and the guy said the only thing you
need to do to use the 134 is change the reciever and the oil. So, I
called the dealer to see if the new reciever dryer that I just bought
was compatible and he said no, there is no kit available to change over
a Toyota yet. Hmmm, does anybody know different. I think I am just
going to charge it with freon but it sure makes me curious. The dealer
said the other components can't handle the newer refrigerant.

My friend changed his '90 Xcab w/AC to R-134a last summer. He had to
replace the expansion valve, reciever, and compressor as well as oil (which
comes in new pumps). Then he charged it himself. Of course he borrowed a
vacuum pump to draw the air out, etc. etc. That thing gets "nipply" cold
even in S.Texas 85% humidity and 100 degree days.

True... 134 attacks rubber components. Try a 12 drop in replacement first.
Freeze 12 I believe is one choice.

Steve, I'm not flaming you but I've had enough.. I was on the first US
Navy ship to do a complete conversion from R-12 to R-134.. U.S.S.
Mt. Hood AE-29 out of Concord CA.
The majority of all refrigerant systems use synthetic O rings including
R-12 and R-134. R-134 WILL turn a Mineral oil into a substance closely
resembling cottage cheese (R-12 uses mineral oil, flush and change it).
Presure settings are approximately 5 to 10 PSI higher with 134 vice 12.
IAW your high side will be 5-10 psi higher (for a H2O cooled unit, adjust
accordingly). The biggest problem with R-134 is leak detection. A
conventional leak detector detects Chlorine atoms. Guess What R-134 has
none. 134 Detectors search for air movement from the leak.

I hadn't thought of the hoses but they are probably a synthetic rubber.
Another difficulty we found with R-134 was it has a extreme solvent affect
on system impurities. We would do nitrogen pressure testing with no leaks,
run the system for 2-3 days and it would leak like a sieve. It's a good
product, just a pain to work with on large systems with antiquated Military
tools (made by the lowest bidder).

What do you need to convert R12 to R134A. A friend said you can flush the
system and compressor with kerosine and replace a valve. What valve and
is the kerosine ok to use to convert this over.

I just purchased a Toyota original A/C for my 90 truck with 134a for
$749. Call John & Phil's at 1-800-542-1516. I was really pleased with
their service.
It wasn't too bad to install myself but I would recommend getting the
A/C installation manual from Toyota. There are lots of little parts.

I just took my truck to an A/C place for R-134 to be installed. I'm getting
a price through the consignment lot where I just bought the truck (94 DX
p/u). $750 for the kit, $300 install.
I don't know who the supplier of the kit is, but the shop is Auto Air &
Radiator in San Carlos (CA).

Barney,
I do have retrofit kits available. It would cost you $39.75. This would
be plus tax and freight. Thanks

Barney,
This includes 8 oz of Ester oil, 3 conversion fittings, a label, and 32
oz of A/C flush. This is for R134a. There are only 2 refrigerants that
you should be using, that is either R12 or R134a, all others are going
to be a blend and should not be used. Thanks

Subject: R12 And Tires???
To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
Hello all I have a commenet and question....
First thing:
I have been taking an Air Condidtioning Heating course part time and
learned something very intresting today from a supplier rep.
Some might already know this but I didn't.
If your Air uses R12 which is VERY expensive and you need to replace it,
you can fill it with a "drop in replacement gas" called R409A. It is
certified for all R12 applications except Auto???? Wonder why, I suspect
a conspiricy by auto makers no S*#t! By drop in I mean you don't have to
vac out your old system and change oil or anything, just take out the R12
and replace. Only catch besides being non auto approved is you only need
to fill the system about 85% with R409A what you would do with R12.

That is not exactly a drop in per se, but damn well close enough. Freeze
12 is a direct replacement and you do not have to alter charge, and can
even mix 12 and Freeze 12.
409A you could not mix the two.
