My gauge started reading much lower than normal during one outing,
which gave great concern as to a fuel leak, but it was just the
sending unit like Jay said. The rod holding the float was bent
and after straightening it like the manual shows, the gauge read
correctly again. I could hear a tapping noise in my tank sometimes
which leads me to think a baffle broke loose and got caught on the
sending unit the one time, bending it. With the sender out, you can
look around it your tank a bit and maybe look for a broken baffle.

Hi all,
        Can anyone tell me the ohms range on the fuel sending unit for an
        '87 22R-TE P/U.
        My gas gauge dies just about when I hit 1/2 a tank and I can't see
        spending the $110.00 the dealer wants for a new one.

Thanks, Bill

PS: Is there any way to open this thing up and repair it?

I have an answer for you:

Float at full =  17 +/- 2.1
Half          =  40 +/- 4.5
Empty         = 120 +/- 6.5

 Measure resistance between the terminal and gauge body.
