The stuff I found was at a store that specializes in parts for Model A's
and T's. It is a cool place with all kinds of old F**D parts, chassis,
bumpers and all. I looked for it because a friend knew of it and told me
about it. I found the store in the yellow pages, under Automobile-Antique
& Classic. It comes in rolls 4 feet high, and about 8 inches in diameter.
It rolls out to 6 feet long. It is good for up to 300 degrees on the
aluminum foil side, so it can be used in the engine compartment.
It is easy to cut with scissors, but very tough to punch through. The rolls
are $23 plus tax, at the ALL F**D store. They have a box of rolls sitting
by the parts counter. I could buy you some, and ship it, but you can
probably find some locally.

I also have discovered a material known as "elephant dung". It is really
sold as 3M Strip Caulk. It is gooey black junk that can be used to seal
holes in the firewall. Like where my A/C hoses go through. It comes in
strips and just kind of mushes into place, and doesn't wash away. My
buddy (who knew about the insulation) gave me a few strips to seal around
my leaky radio antenna wire and my speedometer cable. I don't know where
to get it, but probably the hot rod - restoration places handle it, too.

The insulation I found comes in a roll 4 feet by 6 feet. It is 5/16 inch
thick, which doesn't sound like much, but it is not very spongy and holds
up well. I was surprised to find how tough it was to punch a hole in while
sticking an ice pick up from underneath through my seat mounting holes. I
hope it stays together for a while.

In case you missed my earlier message, that insulation is cool stuff. It
has aluminum foil on one side, with re-enforcement every 1/4 inch, like
rip-stop nylon. The other layer looks like recycled cotton rags. It is
tough stuff, and can be glued onto the metal surfaces, like firewall and
inside of hood, to reduce noise.

JCWhitney has the same stuff in the same size, or bulk rolls. For the
48" x 72" roll regular price is $24.95, I got it on sale for $17.95. I'm in the
process of installing it in my 80 longbed (after the holiday weekend on
the lake on the waverunner!!!!!). Next in goes the carpet.

with all this talk about sound and noise insulation, i gotta bring up my
schpeal about this subject.

in the car audio world, dynamat is king. for about $20-30 you can their
4 sq ft of dynamat stuff. you apply it to any surface and heating it
will help it conform to the surface irregularities. it also have an
adhesive backing to help it stick.

now, other car audio stuff makers are also selling similar stuff now that
probably use the same concept.

but to have the low-buck approach, go to your local hardware place and buy
tons of roofing material for about the same price as a single dynamat
sheet. apply some adhesive and stick. just remember to seal the egdes
or overlap them and seal any holes possible or all the work done will
be useless.

the reason behind this is that in order to quiet a certain part of the car,
you do one of two things: change the resonant frequency of the thing or
change the material of the thing. so taking a door panel as an example,
you can make a door panel out of lead, but it's kinda dangerous and it'll
weigh lots. so, dynamat came up with the stuff you stick on the door
panel and it changes the resonant frequency and presto, it gets quiet
really fast.

(to see how weird it gets, dynamat is selling a 4x2' sheet of wood with
a sheet of dynamat squeezed in between two MDF sheets for about $70-80.
and one car audio competitor went as far as lining his rear truckof
his car with cement! 200 pounds worth)

for heat insulation, now that's another subject...

depends on the thickness. trial and error if needed... but basically,
anything placed on the metal surface will just about do the job...

overlap and duct tape...
