Wil,
I got a rectangular plastic trash can at the local drug store which had fairly
flat plastic sides. I cut a piece of that to seal the floor. I used pieces
of cardboard taped together as a pattern. I started with a big hole in the
cardboard, taped it to the floor around the shifter and then cut and taped
small pieces of cardboard to it around the shifter until I had found the
smallest hole that would clear the shifter. I took the carboard out and
traced the hole onto a piece of the trash can and cut it out. I left a
pretty big area of plastic around the hole to allow me to screw it to the
floor.
I used a piece of neoprene (wet suit material) for the boot around the shifter.
I got a scrap from a local surf shop which custom makes wet suits. I cut
another piece of plastic from my trash can to go around the shifter with more
clearance than the hole cover. I cut the neoprene to fit around the shifter
and fastened it to the second piece of plastic.
I fastened the hole cover, neoprene, and neoprene holder together. I pushed the
whole thing over the shifter and down to the floor. I fastened the whole thing
to the floor. Then I used a tie-wrap to hold the neoprene around the shifter.
The xfer case lever is still using the original boot. I think the shift lever
was originally attached to the same plate with a different boot, but it had
been cut off by the time I got it.
