OK, here's the situation: I'm going to be doing some work to my '86
22R-TE engine. One thing I would like to do is change the timing
chain/gears as a preventative measure (the engine currently has 110k
miles on it, and while these could be good for another 60k miles, I'd
rather not chance it).
Toyota made double-row timing chains for this engine until late '84 or
mid '85 (not sure which).
Is is worthwhile to replace the single-row timing chain setup on my
engine with the double-row components from an earlier 22R? It seems to
me
that double row timing chains would have more inherent strength, just by
being physically bigger: stress would be distributed across a greater
surface area.
In addition to obvious components like chains. gears and tensioners, I
would assume such a swap would also mean changing the timing chain
cover,
oil pump, and possibly water pump (which may be worth changing anyway,
as
long as I have it off).
Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions on this on this? Also, how long
do 22R timing chains (either single or double row) typically last?
I apologize for reposting this (yet again!), but the difficulties with
the digests prevented me from seeing any of the answers to my original
post on this topic, and I would like to do this work ASAP. If someone
would repost the answers to my original thread, I'd be very
appreciative.
Thanks. I am *not* going to repost this question again.

Jeff, while i am a big fan of double row timing chains,i don't really
think that one is necesary in you case. The reason i say this is becaus
many people on this list have 100k miles on a single row chain.I don't
think the swap is very cost effective.iI understand that the swap kits
from LC is around $500?A new single row chain is probably $100,so take
that $400 that you saved and get a locker :)

Jeff,
I have seen both the single and double chains fail at about the same
mileages. I have also seen both last in excess of 300K miles as well.
While I am sure there is something to be said for an extra row of chain,
in the practical world of working on both, I have not seen any advantage
in the double chain.
Replace the chain you have now as a set with the new sprockets, guides,
and tensioner, and you will be covered for another 100K miles of trouble
free operation. Use a kit with good quality parts.
Yes, replacing the water pump is a good idea at this time. 22R pumps are
relatively inexpensive and replacement is good, preventative
maintenance. Don't forget to check your belts and hoses at the same
time.
