For scenery, try the 3N34 from Hooks Creek Rd (34* 16.2'N, 117* 8'W) to
173. If you have time, go down to Devil's Hole (via 3N34D); the road
dead ends and you can walk down to the creek, sit among the trees, and
have lunch.
>From there, go south on 173 to Pilot Rock Truck Trail (2N33), which will
lead you back to 173 just north of Sherwood Lake.
None of this is difficult - it's all truck trails. When you get to
Pilot Rock, you can go either left or right. The left side ends in a
group of concrete pads, but if you look really hard, there is a trail
through the brush back to the road. It looks nasty but I took a stock
91 4-Runner through here about a year ago so it wasn't all that bad.
For more difficulty, try the Crab Flats trail. Supposedly you can get
there from Hooks Creek Rd heading south to Dishpan Springs but I've
never been there. Otherwise, you can get there via the Green Valley
Lake turnoff from 18.
If you have the So. Cal. DeLorme, I can give you more specific info on
where to find these trails.
