Try Red Rock Canyon. For most people, Red Rock Canyon is a paved,
one-way scenic loop that goes near the canyon but doesn't go through it.
But stop in at the Visitor's Center and ask about the trail that goes
from the scenic road through Red Rock Canyon, over Red Rock Summit, and
out to Lovell Wash. I started doing that trip one day but being by
myself I decided after a while that getting stuck out there really
wouldn't be as much fun as sitting around the pool at the Monte Carlo.
Anyway, if nobody on the list can give you more information, you can
stop in at the Visitor's Center and talk to the Rangers.
The entrance to the park is at approximately N36° 07.828' W115°
25.468'. As I said, for most people the road is a paved, one-way loop.
However, just outside the Visitor's Center is a dirt road that cuts
through the middle of the loop. This road starts at about N36° 07.970'
W115° 25.469'.
The dirt road meets back with the paved road at N36° 09.210' W115°
29.135', which is the real entrance to Red Rock Canyon. I took this
road up to about N36° 09.481' W115° 31.264' before turning around.
Continue on the road to N36° 07.030' W115° 34.192', where you make a
right, then take a left when you get to N36° 07.138' W115° 34.173'.
You'll meet up with another road at N36° 07.063' W115° 34.371'.
Either way on this road will take you back to SR-160; left will be
shorter.
Northwest of Red Rock Canyon there appears to be a couple trails but I
have no idea what they're like or if they're worth the trouble. Look
for Carpenter Canyon, Lee Spring Canyon, and Wallace Canyon somewhere in
the vicinity of N36° 13.36' W115° 47.53'.
All these coordinates are coming off of DeLorme Street Atlas 4.0. The
roads also show up on the DeLorme Atlas for Nevada.

P.S. I live about an hour south of you in Orange County. I mention
this because I don't want you thinking all this information is coming
from a Las Vegas native.

I have this writeup on file:
"Go west on Charston Bvd toward red Rock Canyon. Definetly go through the
"loop" youll see the signs, turn right at the visitor center and go straight
into the "loop" there's no off roading there, but its a great 15 mile
drive. On the way back down Charleston toward town, youll see a water
detention basin to your right (comming back) look for the dirt roads to the
left, 4wd up these dirt roads toward the red rocks up on the hill below the
mountain, you can drive right up to these pretty rocks, feel free to get
lost, there are alot of neat trails. These trails lead all the way to kyle
canyon road. Or you can make a right (comming back to town) at the
detention basin (off Chareston) and follow thoose trails behind the
mountains and see the "caves" you can go all the way to the Parump highway.
Kyle and Lee canyons have lots of trails, but it gets mightly cold up there.
Also, check out the Nellis Sand Dunes off of Las Vegas Blvd, past the new
super speedway. You can also go towards the lake and you'll find LOTS of
off road travel there."

Steve,
Go up into Red Rock Canyon. Once you get past the drive-thru
(SPECTACULAR!) area.. there are a number of trails you can take in the
area. off to the left and right. I have gone off just outside of town..
into the desert. It's pretty nice. Just wish I had had my truck out
there... I was working for DEA at the time and only had a rental for a
few months... amazing how far you can get with a Ford Probe before you
have to call the rental company for a tow!
Really... you can go most directions from Vegas and find places to
wheel. Ask at the local gas stations etc.
